Barcelona Arc de Triunf
To know Barcelona, all you need is an adventurous spirit and eager to feed on culture, history, art and design. Barcelona has many emblematic places, one of which is the famous Arc de Triomf “Barcelona Arc de Triomf“.
The Arc de Triomf is a monument located very close to the center of Barcelona, a few steps from Plaza Catalunya, and the nord bus station, specifically located at the confluence of Passeig de Lluis Companys, Passeig de Sant Joan and the round of Sant Pere.
This monument was designed by the architect Jose Vilaseca, as the main entrance to the universal exhibition of Barcelona 1888. The sculptural decoration was in charge of Josep Reynés, Josep Limona, Antoni Vilanova, among others. The Arc de Triunf is registered as a cultural asset of local interest in the inventory of Catalan cultural heritage.
In terms of architecture and design, the door was built in brick, as the trend for that time marked it, since exposed brick provided more plasticity, the arch fuses classic art with a strong Mudéjar language. It has reliefs in the form of sculpture that looks the door on the top.
It is common that when naming Barcelona in the search engines on the Internet, one of the main monuments is the Arc de Triomf, but no photo or painting can really express the imposing and majestic nature of the work; This arch is 30 meters high and is decorated with beautiful friezes (wide part of the central section of an entablature) which in the front bear the title of “Adhesion of Nations to the universal contest”, on the other hand Frieze from the back was created under the title, “the reward”. The doors on the right side are called “Industry, agriculture, and commerce”, and those on the left “Science and Arts”.
It is said that; that for the universal exhibition of 1888, different Projects were presented for the realization of the work with which the city would go down in history. The winning project was to create a door or arch as we all know; nevertheless there were projects that were rejected, being the most outstanding; a young Frenchman named Gustave Eiffel, who proposed the construction of a metal tower, the Eiffel Tower. In the year 1989, almost 100 years after its creation, it was restored.
Unlike other Arcos de Triunfo with a marked military character, the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona has a greater civil component, because it is characterized by artistic, scientific and economic progress. The Arc de Triomf has been used as a goal on occasion for some of the popular Marathons such as Jean Bouin or the Barcelona Marathon. Also, it is used as an enclosure for the celebration of festivals, fairs and musical events such as; Primavera Sound, La Mercè, Sonar, etc.
